Maksud dan tujuan dari program PMT-AS yang secara nasional dimulai pada tahun 1996/1997 di desa-desa IDT untuk di luar Jawa dan Bali adalah untuk meningkatkan ketahanan fisik anak Sekolah Dasar melalui perbaikan keadaan gizi dan peningkatan kesehatan. Adapun tujuan penelitian ini yang berkaitan dengan program PMT-AS yaitu untuk mengetahui gambaran status gizi dan kesehatan murid-murid di empat Sekolah Dasar pada desa-desa IDT di Bengkulu setelah makanan tambahan dalam program PMT-AS diberikan selama enam bulan. Empat Sekolah Dasar dipilih secara purposive, dan responden penelitian adalah murid kelas 1 sampai kelas 6. berhasil diperiksa 543 murid dari empat sekolah dasar dan tidak ditemukan perbedaan yang nyata status gizi dengan menggunakan indikator BB/U, TB/U dan BB/TB antara awal dan akhir penelitian (p>0.05). Demikian juga konsumsi zat-zat gizi energi dan protein ditemukan tidak berbeda nyata pada awal dan akhir penelitian (p>0.05).
