Status gizi ditentukan dengan mengukur berat dan tinggi badan; anemi dengan penentuan kadar Hb menurut cara cyanmethemoglobin; dan status besi dengan penentuan ferritin secara ELISA. Penentuan ferritin hanya dilakukan pada sub-sampel sebanyak masing-masing 18 orang per kelompok pada subjek yang denga nilai Hb kurang dari 11 g/dl, 12-13 g/dl dan lebih dari 13 g/dl. Semua santri wanita remaja contoh termasuk gizi baik. Status gizi dinilai berdasarkan berat badan per tinggi badan. Dengan batas Hb 12 g/dl, prevalensi anemi pada wanita remaja adalah 44,4 persen, 46 persen, berada di bawah nilai hematokrit normal (37%).  Nilai ferritin kelompok dengan Hb kurang dari 11 g/dl adalah 4,8 + 3,6 ug/dl, kelompok dengan Hb 12-13 g/dl adalah 18 + 11,8 ug/dl dan kelompok dengan Hb di atas 13 g/dl adalah 37,8 + 18,3 ug/dl.  Hal ini menggambarkan bahwa makin rendah nilai Hb makin rendah pula nilai ferritin sebagai refleks status besi mereka.
